Appointment of Don Berthiaume as Acting IG at DOJ

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement by Mark Lee Greenblatt on the Appointment of Don Berthiaume as Acting Inspector General at the Department of Justice

Bethesda, MD, October 3, 2025 – I welcome the White House's announcement that Don Berthiaume, my friend and former colleague at the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General, will serve as Acting Inspector General at DOJ. This is good news for the American people.

I worked closely with Don at DOJ OIG's Oversight & Review Division, where we co-led a comprehensive investigation into allegations of politicization within DOJ's Voting Section. Over the course of more than two years working side by side, I came to know Don as a professional who is deeply committed to the Inspector General community and its essential mission of providing fair, objective, and independent oversight.

I have been vocal in my criticism of several of this administration's decisions regarding the OIG community, including Inspector General nominations that I have found problematic. Given that record, I believe it is important, and only fair, to acknowledge when the administration makes sound decisions. The selection of Don Berthiaume is one of those decisions, and the White House deserves credit for this appointment.

The American people benefit when experienced, principled professionals lead our oversight institutions. Don Berthiaume's appointment reflects that standard.
