Statement on Allegations DHS Obstructed Inspector General Raise Serious Concerns

Bethesda, MD, March 5, 2026 – — Allegations that the Department of Homeland Security has obstructed the work of its Inspector General raise serious concerns. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General reportedly outlined these allegations in a letter to Congress, an extraordinary step that underscores the gravity of the situation. The Office of Inspector General exists to ensure accountability, transparency, and integrity within the department. If appropriate oversight has indeed been blocked or undermined as alleged, this erodes public confidence and weakens one of the most important safeguards for protecting both national security and taxpayer dollars.

At a time when the United States faces elevated security threats — including tensions with Iran and significant domestic unrest — DHS must be operating at full strength and with the full confidence of the American public. Any interference with independent oversight has the exact opposite effect. Accountability is not optional for a department entrusted with protecting the homeland.

Independent oversight is the backbone of effective government. If the department’s leadership is impeding the Inspector General’s work, Congress must act to ensure that obstruction of oversight stops immediately.
